- Squirrels running along the roofline or jumping from nearby trees

Squirrels in the attic
Gray squirrels are everywhere in Southern Maryland's wooded neighborhoods, and an attic makes a perfect nesting spot. They chew through soffits, fascia boards, roof vents and the corners where roof lines meet. Once inside, they tear up insulation for nests and chew on wood and wiring, which can create a fire hazard.
Squirrels typically have litters in late winter and again in late summer, which is often when homeowners first hear activity overhead.
How Home Fixer handles it
- Inspect the roofline. We find the main entry hole and any other weak spots squirrels could chew through next.
- Humane removal. We use one-way devices and humane removal methods, and we check for young so none are left behind.
- Repair the damage. We repair chewed soffits, fascia and vents with durable materials under our Maryland Home Improvement Contractor license.
- Seal and protect. We seal the entry points and secure other vulnerable areas so squirrels cannot chew back in.
Trees and access
Overhanging branches give squirrels a direct route to your roof. We will point out trees that should be trimmed back to reduce easy access.
Protecting the rest of the roofline
Squirrels are persistent. When one entry point is sealed, they will test the next weakest spot, often a gable vent, a roof return or the gap where a gutter meets the fascia. That is why we inspect the whole roofline, not just the hole you can see.
We reinforce vulnerable areas with durable materials like heavy-gauge screening and metal flashing, which squirrels cannot chew through the way they can wood and plastic. Combined with trimming back overhanging branches, it makes your home far less inviting.
Squirrel damage is not just cosmetic. Chewed openings let in rain, which can rot fascia and roof sheathing, and wiring damage in the attic can create a fire hazard. The sooner squirrels are removed and the openings are repaired, the less damage there is to fix.
What to do now
Do not seal the hole yourself while squirrels may still be inside. Request a squirrel inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Squirrels questions
How do I know it is squirrels and not rats?
Squirrels are active during the day, especially mornings and late afternoons. Rodents like rats and mice are usually most active at night.
Can squirrels damage wiring?
Yes. Squirrels chew on wiring, which can create a fire hazard. That is one reason to address attic squirrels promptly.
Do you repair the holes squirrels make?
Yes. As a licensed Maryland Home Improvement Contractor, we repair chewed soffits, fascia and vents and seal the entry points.
Home Fixer took care of our problem! They were responsive, knowledgeable, and personable, and they followed up later to check on us. Highly recommend!
