Signs to watch for
- Swarms of winged insects indoors in spring
- Discarded wings on windowsills or floors
- Pencil-width mud tubes on foundation walls or piers
- Wood that sounds hollow or crumbles when probed
- Bubbling paint or sagging floors near sill plates
A quiet, costly problem
Subterranean termites live in the soil and travel into homes through cracks, expansion joints and mud tubes they build along foundations. They feed on wood from the inside out, so damage often goes unnoticed until repairs are needed. Southern Maryland's humid climate, sandy soils and many crawl-space homes give them good conditions to thrive.
Many homeowners first learn they have termites when a spring swarm of winged insects appears indoors, or when a real estate inspection turns up evidence during a sale.
How Home Fixer handles it
- Thorough inspection. Our inspectors are MSPCA WDI-O credentialed (#439 and #722). We check foundations, crawl spaces, basements, sill plates and other accessible areas for activity, damage and conducive conditions.
- Treatment plan. We recommend a treatment approach based on the construction of the home and where termites are active.
- Correct conducive conditions. Wood-to-soil contact, moisture problems and poor drainage all invite termites. We point them out and help fix them.
- Repair the damage. As a licensed Maryland Home Improvement Contractor (MHIC 119520), we can repair termite-damaged wood after treatment.
Termites and home sales
Lenders commonly require a wood-destroying insect (WDI) inspection before settlement. If you are buying or selling, see our real estate inspection services. We have been a Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS affiliate for more than 30 years.
Conditions that attract termites
Termites need moisture and access to wood. Many of the conditions that invite them are easy to overlook:
- Wood siding, trim or deck posts touching the soil
- Mulch piled high against the foundation
- Leaking gutters, downspouts or plumbing that keep soil damp
- Poorly ventilated crawl spaces with standing moisture
- Firewood, lumber or debris stored against the house
During every termite inspection we note these conditions and explain how to correct them. Fixing moisture and wood-to-soil contact makes treatment more effective and makes the home less attractive to termites in the future.
What to do now
If you see a swarm, do not spray it and do not disturb mud tubes. Save a few insects or wings in a sealed bag if you can, and call us. Request a termite inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Termites questions
Is a termite swarm inside my house a sign of infestation?
A swarm indoors usually means there is an active colony in or near the structure. Have the home inspected before the damage progresses.
How can I tell termites from flying ants?
Termites have straight antennae, a thick waist and wings of equal length. Flying ants have bent antennae, a pinched waist and front wings longer than the back wings.
Can you repair termite damage?
Yes. Home Fixer is a licensed Maryland Home Improvement Contractor, so we can repair damaged wood once the termites are treated.
Do you provide WDI inspections for real estate?
Yes. Our inspector is an MSPCA WDI-O Credentialed Inspector and we provide reports for real estate transactions.
Home Fixer took care of our problem! They were responsive, knowledgeable, and personable, and they followed up later to check on us. Highly recommend!
