Signs to watch for

  • Nesting material sticking out of dryer, bath or gable vents
  • Chirping inside walls or vents
  • Droppings on siding, porches, signs or equipment
  • Birds roosting on ledges, beams or rooftop units
  • Woodpecker holes in siding or trim

When birds become a problem

Birds are welcome in the yard, but not in your dryer vent. Starlings and sparrows build nests in vents, soffits, gutters and light fixtures, which can block airflow and create a fire risk in dryer vents. Pigeons and other birds roost on ledges, porches and commercial buildings and leave droppings that damage surfaces and create a mess. Woodpeckers can drill through wood and some types of siding.

How Home Fixer handles it

  • Inspect. We identify the species, nesting sites and roosting areas.
  • Remove nests. Where the law allows, we remove nests and nesting material from vents and other openings.
  • Exclude and protect. We install vent covers and screens and seal gaps so birds cannot get back in, and we can recommend deterrents for roosting areas.
  • Repair and clean. We repair damaged vents, soffits and trim, and clean up droppings where needed.

Protected species

Many native birds are protected by federal law, and their active nests cannot be disturbed. We identify the species first and follow the rules that apply. Non-native species such as starlings, house sparrows and pigeons are handled differently. Either way, sealing the openings keeps the problem from repeating next nesting season.

Birds and dryer vents

Dryer vents are warm, sheltered and easy for small birds to enter when the flap is damaged or missing. A nest inside a dryer vent blocks airflow, makes the dryer work harder and creates a real fire risk from trapped lint. Bath and kitchen exhaust vents can have the same problem.

Once the nest is removed where allowed, we install a guard designed for the vent so air can still flow freely while birds and rodents are kept out. It is a small repair that prevents a recurring problem.

On commercial buildings, roosting birds can damage signs, rooftop equipment and walkways, and droppings create slip hazards and cleanup costs. Exclusion and deterrents designed for the building keep entrances clean and protect equipment without harming the birds.

What to do now

If birds are nesting in a dryer vent, avoid running the dryer until the vent is cleared. Request an inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Three steps to pest-free

  1. 1

    Inspect

We walk the property inside and out to identify the pest, how it's getting in and what's attracting it.

  2. 2

    Plan

You get a clear plan: treatment, removal, repairs and the service schedule that fits your property.

  3. 3

    Protect

We treat, remove and seal entry points, then keep watch with recurring service so they don't come back.

Birds questions

Can you remove birds nesting in my dryer vent?

Yes. We remove the nest where allowed, clean the vent opening and install a guard so birds cannot nest there again.

Are some birds protected?

Yes. Many native birds and their active nests are protected by law. We identify the species and follow the rules that apply before doing any work.

Do you handle birds on commercial buildings?

Yes. We can recommend and install exclusion and deterrents for roosting birds on commercial properties.
