Why you are seeing spiders
Spiders go where the food is. If your home has plenty of insects around exterior lights, in the basement or in the garage, spiders will follow. Most spiders in Southern Maryland are harmless to people, but webs on the siding and a wolf spider darting across the floor at night are enough to make anyone uneasy.
A small number of spiders found in Maryland, such as the black widow and the brown recluse, can deliver a medically significant bite, although the brown recluse is uncommon here. If you are not sure what you are seeing, do not handle it.
How Home Fixer handles it
- Inspect. We find where spiders are living and what insects are drawing them in.
- Treat and de-web. We treat harborage areas outside and in, and remove webs and egg sacs from eaves, windows and entryways.
- Cut off the food supply. General pest treatments reduce the insects spiders feed on, which keeps spider numbers down.
- Seal entry points. We close gaps around doors, windows and utility lines so fewer pests of any kind get inside.
Keeping them away
Spider control works best as part of a recurring general pest plan. Regular service keeps both spiders and their prey under control through the year.
Spiders you may see around the house
- House spiders build tangled webs in corners, windows and basements.
- Wolf spiders are large, fast hunters that do not build webs and often wander in at night, especially in fall.
- Orb weavers spin large round webs around porches, eaves and gardens late in summer.
- Cellar spiders have long thin legs and hang in loose webs in basements and crawl spaces.
Knowing which spiders are present helps us focus treatment on the right areas, whether that is exterior eaves and lighting or the basement and crawl space.
Regular de-webbing also keeps your home looking cared for, which matters to homeowners and businesses alike.
What to do now
Reduce clutter in basements and garages, store items in sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard, and consider switching exterior lights to bulbs that attract fewer insects. Request an inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Spiders questions
Are the spiders in my house dangerous?
Most spiders in Southern Maryland are harmless to people. A few, like the black widow, can deliver a serious bite, so avoid handling any spider you cannot identify.
Why do spiders keep coming back?
Spiders follow their food. If insects are plentiful around your home, spiders will return, which is why we treat both spiders and the insects they eat.
Do you remove webs?
Yes. We remove webs and egg sacs from accessible areas such as eaves, windows and entryways as part of the service.
Home Fixer took care of our problem! They were responsive, knowledgeable, and personable, and they followed up later to check on us. Highly recommend!
