Signs to watch for

  • Scratching or scurrying in walls or ceilings at night
  • Droppings in cabinets, drawers or along baseboards
  • Gnawed food packaging, wires or wood
  • Grease marks along walls and entry points
  • Nests of shredded paper or insulation

Why rodents move in

House mice and Norway rats are drawn indoors by food, water and shelter, especially when the weather cools in the fall. A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime, and rats need only slightly more. Once inside, they contaminate food, chew wiring and insulation, and breed quickly.

Homes near fields, woods and waterfront in Southern Maryland see steady rodent pressure, and outbuildings, garages and crawl spaces are common trouble spots.

How Home Fixer handles it

  • Inspect. We look for droppings, rub marks and gnaw damage to find where rodents are active and how they are getting in.
  • Remove. We use trapping and targeted control methods placed where rodents travel, with safety for children and pets in mind.
  • Seal. This is the step that makes the difference. We close entry points with rodent-resistant materials and repair damaged areas under our Maryland Home Improvement Contractor license.
  • Follow up. We check back to confirm activity has stopped and recommend recurring service where pressure is high.

The damage rodents leave behind

Rodents leave droppings and urine in attics, walls and crawl spaces, and they often tear up insulation for nesting. When needed, we provide attic remediation to remove contaminated material and restore the space.

Mice versus rats

House mice are small, with large ears and thin tails, and usually nest inside walls, cabinets and stored items close to food. Norway rats are larger and heavier, often burrow along foundations, under sheds and in crawl spaces, and travel indoors to feed. Roof rats are less common here but climb well and favor attics.

The species affects where we place control devices and which entry points matter most. Rats can enter through gaps at the foundation and around plumbing, while mice squeeze through almost any small opening from the ground to the roofline. Our inspection covers both so nothing is missed.

What to do now

Store food in sealed containers, keep pet food put away at night, and avoid sweeping or vacuuming droppings, which can stir up dust. Request an inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Three steps to pest-free

  1. 1

    Inspect

We walk the property inside and out to identify the pest, how it's getting in and what's attracting it.

  2. 2

    Plan

You get a clear plan: treatment, removal, repairs and the service schedule that fits your property.

  3. 3

    Protect

We treat, remove and seal entry points, then keep watch with recurring service so they don't come back.

Rodents questions

How are mice getting into my house?

Common entry points include gaps around pipes and utility lines, garage door seals, foundation vents, and openings at the roofline. Mice can fit through very small gaps.

Why is sealing entry points so important?

Removing the rodents inside does not stop new ones from coming in. Sealing entry points is what keeps the problem from returning.

Can you clean up after rodents?

Yes. We can remove contaminated insulation and nesting material as part of our attic remediation service.
