Signs to watch for
- Bites every time you step outside in the evening
- Standing water in gutters, buckets, tarps or birdbaths
- Heavy activity in shady, damp corners of the yard
- Mosquitoes resting under decks and in dense shrubs
Life near the water
Living near the Chesapeake Bay, the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers and the many creeks and marshes of Southern Maryland has a downside in summer. Mosquitoes breed in any standing water, from wetlands to a bottle cap, and the Asian tiger mosquito is active during the day as well as at dusk.
Beyond being a nuisance, mosquitoes can carry diseases such as West Nile virus, which makes controlling them around your home worthwhile.
How Home Fixer handles it
- Yard inspection. We look for breeding sites and the shady, humid areas where adult mosquitoes rest during the day.
- Targeted treatment. We treat resting areas such as shrubs, undersides of decks and the edges of wooded areas.
- Source reduction. We point out standing water and drainage problems so you can remove breeding sites.
- Recurring service. Mosquito control works best on a schedule through the warm months. Many customers pair it with tick control.
Why a schedule matters
New mosquitoes hatch throughout the season, so a single treatment will not last all summer. Recurring visits keep populations down from spring into fall, when you are most likely to be outside.
Common breeding sites around the home
Many of the mosquitoes biting you were raised within a short distance of where you are standing. Look for water collecting in:
- Clogged gutters and downspout extensions
- Buckets, flower pot saucers, toys and wheelbarrows
- Tarps, boat covers and pool covers
- Birdbaths, fountains and ornamental ponds without circulation
- Tree holes and low spots in the yard that stay wet after rain
Removing these sources makes every treatment work better and shortens the time mosquitoes can build up between visits.
Waterfront homes, properties near marshes and yards with dense landscaping usually see the most activity. If your neighborhood has standing water you cannot control, such as a pond, ditch or wetland, recurring treatment of your own yard is the most practical way to cut down on bites and make evenings on the deck enjoyable again.
What to do now
Walk your yard once a week and dump anything holding water, clean gutters, and change birdbath water often. Then let us handle the rest. Request mosquito service or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Mosquitoes questions
When should mosquito service start?
Starting in spring, before populations build, gives the best results. Service typically continues through the warm months into fall.
Can you treat for mosquitoes and ticks together?
Yes. Many customers combine mosquito and tick control, since both are active in the same season and in similar parts of the yard.
What can I do between visits?
Remove standing water weekly, keep gutters clear, and trim dense vegetation where mosquitoes rest.
Home Fixer took care of our problem! They were responsive, knowledgeable, and personable, and they followed up later to check on us. Highly recommend!
