Signs to watch for

  • Trails of ants along counters, baseboards or windowsills
  • Small piles of soil or sawdust-like debris near walls
  • Large black ants indoors in late winter or spring
  • Winged ants swarming near windows
  • Activity around sinks, dishwashers and pet bowls

Why ants keep coming back

The ants you see on the counter are a small part of the colony. The rest are nesting in the soil, under slabs, in wall voids or in damp wood, and they will keep sending workers inside as long as there is food and moisture to find. Wiping up a trail or spraying the ones you see rarely touches the nest.

In Southern Maryland we see odorous house ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants and carpenter ants most often. Carpenter ants deserve special attention because they excavate damp or damaged wood to build their nests.

How Home Fixer handles it

  • Identify the ant. Different species respond to different treatments, so we start by confirming what you have.
  • Find the colony. We follow trails back to nesting sites and look for the moisture problems that attract them.
  • Treat the source. We use targeted treatments designed to reach the colony, not just the foragers.
  • Seal and repair. We close the gaps ants use to get in, and repair water-damaged wood carpenter ants have moved into.

Carpenter ants and wood damage

Carpenter ants do not eat wood the way termites do, but they hollow it out to nest. Finding large black ants indoors in late winter or early spring, or piles of coarse sawdust near trim and framing, can mean a nest inside the structure. Because we are a licensed Maryland Home Improvement Contractor, we can repair the damaged wood after the colony is gone.

Common ants we see

  • Odorous house ants are small and brown, trail along counters and give off a rotten-coconut smell when crushed.
  • Pavement ants nest under slabs, sidewalks and driveways and push up small piles of soil through cracks.
  • Acrobat ants often nest in moisture-damaged wood and foam insulation and raise their abdomens when disturbed.
  • Carpenter ants are large and black and excavate damp or damaged wood to build nests inside structures.

Each of these has different habits, which is why identification comes first and why a single store-bought product rarely solves the problem.

What to do now

Keep food sealed, fix dripping faucets and move mulch and firewood away from the foundation. Then let us find the colony. Request an inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Three steps to pest-free

  1. 1

    Inspect

We walk the property inside and out to identify the pest, how it's getting in and what's attracting it.

  2. 2

    Plan

You get a clear plan: treatment, removal, repairs and the service schedule that fits your property.

  3. 3

    Protect

We treat, remove and seal entry points, then keep watch with recurring service so they don't come back.

Ants questions

Why do ants come back after I spray them?

Sprays usually kill only the workers you can see. The colony keeps producing more, so the trail comes back unless the nest is treated.

Are carpenter ants the same as termites?

No. Carpenter ants hollow out wood to nest but do not eat it, while termites feed on wood. Both can damage a structure and both need professional attention.

How long does ant treatment take to work?

Some treatments work quickly, while others are designed to be carried back to the colony and take a little longer. We will explain what to expect for your situation.
