Signs to watch for

  • Large burrow openings near foundations, decks or sheds
  • Mounds of dirt beside a hole in the yard
  • Vegetable gardens and flower beds eaten down
  • A large brown animal feeding in the yard early or late in the day

Burrows that cause real damage

Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, are common across Southern Maryland's fields, woods and suburban yards. They dig extensive burrow systems, often under decks, sheds, porches and slabs. Over time those tunnels can undermine footings and foundations and create tripping hazards in the yard. Groundhogs are also serious garden pests.

How Home Fixer handles it

  • Inspect. We find active burrow entrances and determine how many animals are present.
  • Humane removal. We use humane removal methods that follow Maryland wildlife regulations.
  • Block re-entry. We close burrows and install barriers around decks, sheds and porches so another groundhog cannot move in.
  • Repair. Where burrowing has damaged structures, we can make repairs under our Maryland Home Improvement Contractor license.

Why barriers matter

Empty burrows attract new animals. Installing a buried barrier around the base of a deck or shed is the most reliable way to keep groundhogs, skunks and other burrowing animals from setting up underneath it again.

When groundhogs are most active

Groundhogs hibernate through winter and come out in late winter or early spring to breed. Young are born in spring and leave the burrow in early summer to dig burrows of their own, which is when many homeowners notice new holes. Groundhogs feed mostly early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Addressing a groundhog in spring, before young are born, or after young have dispersed makes removal simpler. We will recommend the best timing for your situation and make sure the burrow is empty before it is closed.

Groundhog burrows can also cause trouble for mowers and create ankle-twisting holes where children and pets play. Removing the animal, closing the burrow properly and installing barriers around structures protects both your yard and your foundation. We can also check the rest of the property for secondary burrow entrances that are easy to miss.

What to do now

Keep pets away from the burrow and do not try to fill it in while the animal may still be inside. Request an inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Three steps to pest-free

  1. 1

    Inspect

We walk the property inside and out to identify the pest, how it's getting in and what's attracting it.

  2. 2

    Plan

You get a clear plan: treatment, removal, repairs and the service schedule that fits your property.

  3. 3

    Protect

We treat, remove and seal entry points, then keep watch with recurring service so they don't come back.

Groundhogs questions

Can groundhogs damage my foundation?

Burrows under slabs, decks and foundations can undermine footings and soil support over time, so they are worth addressing early.

Can I just fill the hole?

Not while the animal may be inside. Groundhog burrows usually have multiple openings, and filling one often does not solve the problem.

How do I keep groundhogs from coming back?

Installing a buried barrier around decks, sheds and porches is the most reliable way to prevent new burrows.
