Signs to watch for
- Plants and vegetables clipped off cleanly at an angle
- Gnawed bark on young trees and shrubs, especially in winter
- Small round droppings in garden beds
- Nests of fur and grass in the lawn
Small animals, big appetite
Eastern cottontails are a familiar sight across Southern Maryland, and a few can do a lot of damage to vegetable gardens, flower beds and landscaping. In winter, when other food is scarce, they chew the bark of young trees and shrubs, which can girdle and kill them.
How Home Fixer handles it
- Assess the damage. We confirm rabbits are the cause and find where they are sheltering.
- Exclusion. We recommend and install fencing and barriers for gardens and tree guards for young trees.
- Reduce cover. Rabbits hide in brush piles, tall grass and under sheds and decks. We identify and close off those spots.
- Removal when needed. Where removal is appropriate, we follow Maryland wildlife regulations.
What works long term
Because rabbits are plentiful, protecting what you want to keep is usually more effective than trying to remove every animal. Proper fencing, tree guards and blocking access under structures give lasting results.
Protecting young trees
Rabbits and voles chew the bark near the base of young trees and shrubs in winter, when other food is scarce. If the bark is chewed all the way around the trunk, the tree can die. Fruit trees and ornamental shrubs are especially vulnerable.
A tree guard or cylinder of hardware cloth around the trunk, extending above expected snow depth and slightly into the soil, prevents most of this damage. We can install guards and recommend fencing so your landscaping makes it through the winter.
Raised garden beds with hardware cloth on the sides and bottom also protect vegetables from both rabbits and burrowing animals. Removing brush piles, blocking the space under sheds and decks and keeping grass trimmed around beds makes the yard less comfortable for rabbits to settle into. These steps work together with fencing for lasting results.
What to do now
If you find a rabbit nest in the lawn, leave it alone. The mother usually visits only a few times a day. Request an inspection or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Rabbits questions
What kind of fence keeps rabbits out?
A fence with small openings that extends slightly below ground and at least a couple of feet high keeps most rabbits out of gardens.
Why are my young trees losing bark?
In winter, rabbits and voles often chew bark near the base of young trees. Tree guards can protect them.
Should I move a rabbit nest in my yard?
No. Leave it in place. The young usually leave the nest within a few weeks.
Home Fixer took care of our problem! They were responsive, knowledgeable, and personable, and they followed up later to check on us. Highly recommend!
