Signs to watch for
- Raised ridges or tunnels running across the lawn
- Volcano-shaped mounds of soil
- Narrow surface runways through the grass
- Plants wilting with roots or bulbs chewed away
- Gnawed bark at the base of shrubs and young trees
Two different pests
Moles and voles are often confused, but they cause different damage. Moles are insect eaters that tunnel just below the surface looking for grubs and earthworms, leaving raised ridges and mounds of soil. Voles are small rodents that make surface runways through the grass and chew on roots, bulbs and the bark of shrubs and young trees.
Southern Maryland's moist, loamy soils and mature landscaping support both, and damage often shows up most in spring and fall.
How Home Fixer handles it
- Identify the culprit. Tunnels, mounds and runways tell us whether you have moles, voles or both.
- Targeted control. We use control methods suited to the species and focused on active tunnels and runways.
- Protect plants. We recommend ways to protect beds, bulbs and young trees from vole feeding.
- Ongoing monitoring. Neighboring properties can send new animals your way, so we can set up follow-up visits during active seasons.
Reducing habitat
Voles like cover. Keeping mulch thin near plant stems, trimming ground cover and mowing tall grass along edges helps. For moles, the goal is to address the animals directly, since their food source lives naturally in healthy soil.
Lawn care and moles
A healthy, well-watered lawn with plenty of earthworms is exactly what moles are looking for, which is why a nice lawn can suddenly show fresh tunnels. Moles are solitary and territorial, so the damage in a yard is often caused by fewer animals than it looks like.
Voles are the opposite. They breed quickly and can build up large populations under snow and dense cover in winter, which is why homeowners often discover vole runways and damaged shrubs in early spring. Addressing voles in fall, before winter, helps protect your landscaping.
Results come fastest when control starts at the first sign of new damage, before tunnels spread across the yard.

Moles & Voles questions
How can I tell moles from voles?
Moles leave raised tunnels and volcano-shaped mounds. Voles leave narrow surface runways in the grass and chew on roots, bulbs and bark.
Why do moles keep coming back?
Healthy soil with plenty of earthworms and grubs attracts moles, and new ones can move in from neighboring land. Ongoing monitoring helps.
Do voles damage trees?
Yes. Voles can chew bark at the base of shrubs and young trees, which can seriously damage or kill them.
