Ticks in Southern Maryland

Wooded lots, deer and tall grass make much of Southern Maryland prime tick country. Blacklegged (deer) ticks, lone star ticks and American dog ticks are all common here, and they can carry diseases that affect people and pets. Ticks wait on low vegetation and leaf litter for a host to brush past, so the edges of lawns and wooded areas are the highest-risk zones.

How Home Fixer handles it

  • Yard assessment. We identify tick habitat, including leaf litter, brush, stone walls, woodpiles and the transition zone between lawn and woods.
  • Targeted treatment. We treat the areas where ticks live and wait for hosts, focusing on the edges and shaded spots your family and pets use.
  • Habitat recommendations. We suggest simple changes, like clearing leaf litter and creating a barrier between lawn and woods, that make the yard less inviting to ticks.
  • Seasonal service. Tick control is most effective on a recurring schedule and pairs well with mosquito control.

Reducing wildlife hosts

Ticks ride in on deer, mice and other animals. If rodents or other wildlife are nesting around your home, addressing them helps reduce ticks too. Our wildlife and rodent control services can be combined with tick treatments.

Ticks and your pets

Dogs and outdoor cats often bring ticks inside, where they can then latch onto people. Pets that roam the edge of the woods or lie in leaf litter are especially likely to pick them up. Treating the yard reduces the number of ticks your pets encounter, and a veterinarian-recommended preventive protects them when they do.

After walks or yard work, check pets around the ears, neck, between the toes and under the collar. Remove any attached ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, pulling straight out. If you or a family member develops a rash, fever or flu-like symptoms after a tick bite, contact your doctor.

Treatment is most effective when it starts early in the season, before tick activity peaks.

What to do now

Check yourself, your children and your pets after time outdoors, and talk with your veterinarian about tick prevention for pets. Then let us treat the yard. Request tick service or call or text (301) 659-0300.

Three steps to pest-free

  1. 1

    Inspect

We walk the property inside and out to identify the pest, how it's getting in and what's attracting it.

  2. 2

    Plan

You get a clear plan: treatment, removal, repairs and the service schedule that fits your property.

  3. 3

    Protect

We treat, remove and seal entry points, then keep watch with recurring service so they don't come back.

Ticks questions

Where do ticks live in my yard?

Ticks favor shady, humid areas with leaf litter, tall grass and brush, especially where the lawn meets the woods.

Does tick treatment replace personal precautions?

No. Yard treatments reduce ticks, but you should still check for ticks after being outdoors and keep pets on a veterinarian-recommended preventive.

How often should the yard be treated?

Tick control works best as recurring service during the warm months. We will recommend a schedule based on your property.
